This is a bit of a random question, but the answer ha sbeen bugging me for a long time. Ok so...
On a microwave, if you push 60, then it will cook for 60 seconds or one minute.(Following me?) AND if you also press 1:00 it will cook for one minute, or 60 seconds.(Right, right?) OK! Well, my question is.... If you add 1:00 + 1:00 it is = 2:00 right? So your food will cook for a total of two minutes. BUT if you add 60 seconds + 60 seconds it will only cook for one minute and twenty seconds. Even though 60 seconds is one minute? (I know, confusing question.)
I guess to put it into simpliest terms, How come 1 minute + 1 minute = 2 minutes, but 60 seconds + 60 seconds = only one minute and twenty seconds?
if you can give me the right answer you will win a cookie.

we dont even hav a microwave here at home ... i guess it is because the microwave adds 60+60 and then thinks that 1:00 which looks like 100 is one minute and 60+60 is 120 so it is 1min and 20 secs right? that would be what i think it is just a program mistake coz that 60 is 1 minute is ok but it wasnt programed that a addition of seconds has to be shared through 60 to get the mins and the wave takes 100 to share the seconds and get minutes

DAKE YOU ARE RIGHT. 100% correct . to be honest i didnt think anyone would get it that quick the answer is the Microwave uses Base 100 for addition, and uses Base 60 for cooking times.
Put simply: 100 seconds = 1 Minute 40 seconds, right? You would put in 1:40.
If you put in 60, it equals one minute. If you add 60 to that, the computer inside the microwave reads the new number as 120, and forces the colon between the 1 and 2, creating 1:20, AkA 80 seconds.

From 1:20 it will eventually go down to 1:01 and then 1:00 and then :59 etc. Just like any timekeeping device counting down to something. R U sure your microwave is from this century and all? Maybe you are living on the edge of a timezone, and the micro has an issue with witch GMT +/- time it should use to cook you vegetables and does it 50/50 in both zones? And what's the point here to begin with anyways?
