So, anyone ever played this game or it's predecessor Demon's Souls?
If so, discuss it here. Both games are famous for being notoriously hard.
You can create your character, pick and choose from 10 or so different classes.
When you die in this game, you lose all of the souls that you have collected and can pick them up again by walking to your corpse and collecting them - however if you die on your way there, the previous corpse / your souls are lost for good. Equipment, luckily, is not affected.
You gain souls by killing enemies, and it acts as the games primary currency, which can be used to either level up or to buy stuff etc.
When I first encountered a boss, and kept dying in two hits or so, I wasn't pleased. Still, I thought I'd give it another shot.
So I went on google, and searched for some tips.
On my way for another try, I managed to beat it using the tips I found on the internet. Cheating perhaps? The damn game comes with a digital guide though. This continued and whenever there was something I just couldn't pass by, I'd look it up and find help on how to maneuver. Soon, the experience gets a lot better and the hard encounters aren't that hard when you start figuring shit out.
Losing your souls can be really frustrating in the beginning, but not late into the game you will find ways to get easy access to large amounts of souls and if you lose a few thousand, it wont even matter.
The world/Dungeons are great, yet might feel a bit narrow at times.
Literally every section or place in the game interlopes with one another, and as you traverse further and find keys and stuff you will be able to open shortcuts for easier access.
When it comes down to combat, I like it a lot. Come across a few, boring skeletons? Kill them fast - but make a mistake and they will punish you and you might easily lose up to 50% of your health.
Get greedy and run past a lot of them, only to be knocked down later and they all mobbing you? Tough luck, as it might cost you your life.
A big, scary Black Knight assaults you; better be ready to block and figure out when to land a hit and when to raise your shield again or roll away from an attack and then land a riposte. Once again, a mistake will cost you dearly.
You do however, have 5 Estus Flasks (or the games equivalent to potions) that restore your health, sometimes 10 (I haven't figured out this yet, but if/when you become human (you are undead by default) you will have more of them) and need to use them cautiously. Every time you come across a checkpoint (which is a bonfire, located thorough the game and works as a safe spot) the flasks replenish.
So to sum up, it feels like the combat from Assassins creed (a bit improved though and more rpg elements), set in a grim-dark world of the undead and scary stuff. I'm gonna go as far as to say that it has a zelda-isque feel to it, you have to discover and make choices on your own to progress as there is no red line to levels, equipment or where to go really. Combine that with rpg elements, a bit like final fantasy 12 in particular and you have Dark Souls.
Of course, there are complaints too, like the occasional unfair enemy that will charge at you without warning or some of the stuff in the game lost in translation. The english can be a bit tacky as it is translated from Japanese.
Oh, and I have no real idea about the plot. You are just a chosen undead and escape from the undead asylum to kill all the bad things really. And off you go, to choose for yourself which demon shall die first and which corner of the dungeon you want to see.
Here's a little (funny) video that describes the game well. Kill an npc if you wish, but suffer the consequences - kinda like in Skyrim
Tl;dr: Dark Souls, hard game, gets really fun and rewarding later
