PSN survey hints at upcoming subscription-based features by Mike Schramm { 21 hours ago }
Sony's European team has sent out a survey to some of its UK PSN members asking them yet again about possible subscription models for the service. The survey is run by a market research company called Ipsos, and appears to offer up a list of possible member benefits for a few different plan tiers, along with pricing for each. The benefits range from more tame ideas like exclusive and early access to content to more interesting options like "free title trials"(first hour of a game for free), user-to-user challenges,"token wagering" and a service called "catch-up TV." Oh, and since it's Sony we're talking about, there's even a listed option for "cloud storage space for games." You can find the full list of possible features after the jump.
The price options differ from plan to plan, but they go as cheap as £2.99 (about $5 U.S.) up to £14.99 (about $25) for monthly fees, with annual fees also listed for 55% less than you'd pay month to month (so around £19.99 up to £99.99, or $32 to $160). Note that just because all of these things are on a survey doesn't mean that Sony has them up and running -- it only means that they're testing the water in terms of what UK members are willing to pay for certain features. But you can just add this to the growing mountain of evidence that Sony is planning some sort of premium subscription service.

well I don't think it comes a surprise to anybody Sony tries to climb up the downward economic vortex they've been sucked into after launching the PS3 and its services.

hmmm quitting and selling... what alternative do u guys have? It doesn’t help to change to a xbotter, right? If Sony decides to charge for the PSN in the future then that sucks yes but I can’t say I didn’t see it coming. People are happily paying for Live and the community is much larger than the free Playstation Network. I have always thought that the free network gaming would decide this console war for Sony's favor but it seems I couldn’t have been more wrong…

It's a matter of different features inside PSN that might come with a monthly fee, subscription based features that they're now testing with the brits. Read the quote. And please correct me if i'm wrong.

the article is not entirely clear, i wonder if the cheapest option is to give the ability to play online sorta like xbox live gold or just access to demos ?.
I threw this out here just to see if anyone had seen any other news not to scaremonger ( sorry )
One would hope its an optional thing and had sony released there console in time the free online would have gave it lead over xbox but alas microsft released a pc in a box big enough to fit under the pc and more importantly very very easy to port to or program on.
I watch with interest and will update if anything more concrete appears, oh and nemez if you have space add highpingdrifter, thats my mw2 account.

I was just speculating over the worst case scenario which I think will eventually come (PS4) but lets hope for the best. I blame Ken Kutagari who designed this hardware too complex for the coders. That's why he had to go. Well I believe the ps2 used the same formula and was as complex but even so. Multiplatform games still looks better on 360 (resolution and textures) than on the cell machine But you’re right fella, the 360 is just a directx9 featured pc. What an easy plan for the win over the playstation dominance!

Maiske I think you're entitled to that based on the Finnish law anyways. It's an electronic device that's supposed to last for at least three years so you can get it repaired or replaced for free.
